COMMON QUESTIONS

First home buyer FAQs

  • The FHOG is a $10,000 cash grant from the NSW Government for eligible first home buyers purchasing or building a new home. It applies to new homes valued up to $600,000, or house and land packages up to $750,000. It can be combined with the stamp duty exemption. We lodge the application on your behalf.

  • If your spouse or de facto partner has previously owned residential property anywhere in Australia, you may not be eligible for the First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme — even if they are not on the title of the property you're buying. This is one of the most common traps for first home buyers. Talk to us before you sign anything.

  • You may be eligible if you're purchasing a home for the first time, the property is valued at $800,000 or less, and you intend to live in it as your principal place of residence. If your spouse or de facto partner has previously owned property in Australia, you may not be eligible. We advise on eligibility as part of your conveyancing.

  • Under the First Home Super Saver Scheme (FHSSS), you may be able to withdraw voluntary super contributions to put towards your deposit. This is managed through the Australian Tax Office, not through your conveyancer — but we can point you in the right direction.
